How to Freshen Up Your Farmhouse

Farmhouse

Farmhouses are stunning places. They’re full of warmth, and family, and wide open areas. The only problem is that they tend to get worn down quite quickly. This isn’t because they’re inherently harder to upkeep than a home in the city or anywhere else, just that they tend to be larger. If the house isn’t bigger, then it’s the yard. Most of the time, however, it’s both.

If you feel like you’re farmhouse has seen better days – even if those days were from before you moved in – then this guide is for you. Read on to discover just how to freshen up your farmhouse and help bring it back to life:

Get Tools to Make Maintenance Easier

One of the biggest obstacles to keeping up with all the maintenance tasks on a farmhouse is how long they take. Mow a small city yard with a push mower, and you’ll be done in less than an hour.

Try to mow a multi-acre estate with that same mower, and you’ll be at it for days. Sure, you can do it once, but lawns need to be mowed several times per month.

So, what do you do? You get the tools that make those jobs easier. You can speed up your lawn mowing (and actually have more fun while doing it) by investing in one of the top zero turn mowers. You can also get electronic hedge trimmers, a power washer, or even a spray painter. The options are almost endless, and can help you keep up with upkeep easily.

Do a Scan and Create a List

You aren’t going to be able to completely freshen up your farmhouse in one go, at least not without a whole team helping you. To help you keep your costs low (particularly since those maintenance tools can be expensive) you’ll want to first do a full walk around your property and make a list of what needs to be done. Separate that list into:

  • Regular maintenance
  • High priority fixes
  • Medium-priority fixes
  • Low-priority fixes
  • Decoration

You’ll then want to start regularly maintaining the property. From there, you will also need to bring in experts for quotes on the high-priority fixes. These are often serious issues that you don’t want to try DIYing. The roof might be leaking or might be missing shingles. Your window box might be rotting, and so on.

Work your way down that list so you can focus your money where it’s needed most. Take your time on the lower-priority items; before you know it, your farmhouse will look new and pretty.

Remember: Don’t Paint Away Problems

While it may be tempting to just slap on a fresh coat of paint over your property, this is actually one of the last things you need to do (decoration). If you paint or decorate too fast, the décor will likely rot off, or your home itself will be more damaged in the long run. Do it right, however, and that new paintjob will last, and can be properly sealed to last even longer.
