It is practically impossible to believe that the hit show House MD first aired 20 years ago.
It seemed set to be a show that was lost to the ages, but on December 10th, 2024, the Fox Network confirmed rumors that this popular medical show was going to be hitting the small screens in 2025. To say fans of the belligerent doctor are buzzing would be an understatement!
Why Did House End?
With the series ending eight years ago, many fans were left to wonder why.
In short, the ratings dropped, and the cast was eager to move on to other projects. Indeed, the star of the show, Hugh Laurie, went on tour to promote his album Let Them Talk (2011) as well as write some new hard and easy piano songs for fans to learn online from his appearances around LA.
Lisa Edelstein, who played hospital administrator Lia Cuddy, and love interest of House, went on to star in shows such as The Good Wife, Castle, The Good Doctor, and The Kominsky Method. In short, it just seemed that the stars of the show were eager to diversify their roles, and, of course, moving away from House MD allowed Laurie to spend more time with his family, who he admitted to feeling he had neglected during filming.
Why Is House Set to Return?
At the time of writing, the return of House MD has been confirmed, but why? Well, it seems that now, after years of streaming shows, reality TV, and a sleuth of other popular medical shows being overshadowed by House, fans of the show have been pushing for it to return.
However, as the show ended eight years ago, fans have to be open to the possibility that some of the cast may have been replaced by Fox Studio. It is not known yet if Laurie is going to return for his role as the genius doctor, but he has admitted to having a complicated relationship with the character that he played for so long. He has also stated that he would have mixed feelings about returning as Gregory House, with concerns that due to new writers and other media influences that are predicted in 2025, the fans of the old show might be let down.
This view has also been backed up by other stars of the show, such as Robert Sean Leonard (Dr Wilson) and Jesse Spencer (Dr Chase). As a matter of fact, it would be odd if Dr Wilson did return, as this character had been given a terminal cancer diagnosis just as the show ended.
A House Reboot?
It is therefore likely to assume that Fox may opt for a reboot of the entire cast of the show. Will this have the same impact as the original cast? With the popularity of Laurie, Edelstein, Leonard, Spencer, and even Olivia Wilde as 13, it is hard to say.
If you were a fan of House MD, watch this space as soon the cast list may be released and who knows? The misanthropic doctor may be back with his cane before you know it!
