You might not have had to worry much about your home throughout the summer months, with the dry and warm weather keeping your home comfortable and in an excellent state. However, as the fall starts to hit, with its falling leaves and colder spells, your house might start to be under attack from the elements- and much more. As such, here are some of the home features that you should keep an eye on in the coming months.
Your Gutters
Your gutters can easily become filled with leaves throughout the fall months. Although their flashes of red and orange can be stunningly beautiful, you do not want them clogging your gutters. This can lead to drainage issues, which can cause leaks and bad aromas around your home as the stagnant water starts to grow. To avoid any damage to your guttering, and to keep your plumbing functional, you should try to get up a ladder and remove the majority of falling leaves that end up making your guttering impassable.
Your Roof
Roofs are particularly vulnerable to the elements throughout the winter months, as they are the first barrier against rain, snow and hail. Rather than trusting in your roof to protect you from the cold and wet, you should check it regularly. Some signs that there are issues include leaks in your home, as well as disturbed or smashed tiles. If you spot a problem, you should contact a professional immediately, as roof issues can end up damaging your interior. Even if your ceiling has not sprung a leak yet, this does not mean that there is not an internal issue, especially if you start to feel a draft or if you can hear running water coming from somewhere. This means that you should look around for an excellent roofing company near you.
Your Heaters
You might be starting up your heaters for the first time since last winter. This can have a few teething problems. For instance, if you are starting them up and no heat is coming out, they might need bleeding. This is a process that you can perform DIY. You should also immediately stop using heaters if they overheat, if you can smell burning, and if they start making grinding noises.
Your Pipes
Your pipes are susceptible to the cold, and they can freeze regularly if you are not careful and if the fall is particularly chilly. This can prevent you from getting tap water into your home. Not only this, but the pipes themselves might crack and even burst, which can end up being destructive and costly for your family. Putting the heating on for an hour or so during cold weather can keep water moving through them and can prevent them from freezing- and you should ask someone to do this for you, or put your heating on a timer, if you are going away somewhere. This will mean that you are able to enjoy drinking water, washing, and showering, no matter what the weather is like outside.
